CONSOLE CORNER

More sales news from Calrec, this time about Global Television of Canada.

Both Canwest Media and Calrec Audio are no strangers. For some years, the mobile fleet of vehicles has been using a number of Calrec consoles. In fact, going back to the late 1990s there has always been significant interest in the product.

However, we can only raise a knowing smile at the latest press release. It mentions the beginning of the tender process and a comment by Global: "In addition, Global wanted to use the same consoles as in its outside broadcast (OB) trucks and its studios." An unfortunate thing to say in a press release. So it looks like Global Television wanted the Calrec product from the get-go. So why wrap it up in a tendering process giving other manufacturers the impression everyone has a chance to win the business?

Of course we are not saying there is any impropriety here, but when, for example, PBS or EU rules demand it and an official tendering process is called for, manufacturers often like to get their own unique feature into a tender document. The tendering company wishing to purchase that product often agree, effectively making sure they shut out the competition.

So we guess the uniqueness of having your own product in Canwest Media mobiles and studios rather limits the other manufacturer's chances then?
